「入会までにどんな準備を？」

イングリッシュ・スクエアにはおかげさまでたくさんの方に、
ご入会年度の１～２年前から入会ご予約をいただいています。

そして、ご予約くださったみなさまに一番よくいただくご質問は・・・
「入会までにどんな準備をしておけばいいですか？」

わたしの答えはいつも同じ。
「ゆったりとした時間の流れのなかで、クリエイティブなあそびを一緒に楽しんで下さい。」
「お友だちとのあそびを通してコミュニケーション力をつけてさしあげてください。」
「英語力をつけなければ・・・とあせらないでください。」

日本語を使いながらクリエイティブな遊びに興じたり、お友達と交わることができれば、
そのスキルをそのまま英語の学習に応用することができるんです！

逆に、伸びやかに遊べなかったり、日本語でお友達と交わるのが難しい子どもたちには、
イングリッシュ・スクエアのレッスンはちょっと大変です。

だって、英語でこんなことをするのですから・・・。

きょうのレッスンより

レベル１（小１）

Outdoorをテーマに発表したいことを考えて絵と英語で表現します

単語のスペルはテキストで調べて書きます

そして、自分の作品をお友達に見せて英語で話しかけます

読むのではなく、「ことばを使ってお友達と関わる」のです

ちょっと困っても、子どもたちだけですすめて行きます

ついつい助けたくなる先生は、ここでぐっとガマン！

そうすると・・・

だれかが勇気をだして動き始めて、また活動がすすんでいきます

レベル４（小３）

フォニックスのカードを使ってお友達と読みの練習

相手のペースにあわせるのも大切なスキル

現在進行形を使った会話ゲームもペアで進めます

次は会話ゲームで使った英文をプリントに書きます

ここでも難しい単語は自分で調べなければなりません

レベル８（中１）

過去形を使ったカードゲーム

カードを読み上げるのはご法度

ちゃんとお友達と視線を交わしながら

この後、高校生レベルの読解活動で

アイルランドの祭日"St. Patrick's Day"について学んで・・・

最後に文法もしっかり確認

ペアで答えを比べていって

答えが違っていたら解説を読みながら教えあいます

というわけで・・・

イングリッシュ・スクエアのレッスンを楽しむには

Learning to be Independent 自立をめざして

イングリッシュ・スクエアでは、グローバル社会での活躍に必要な「自立心」を育む活動をたくさん取り入れています。

「楽しく協力し合って、先生を頼らず自分たちで解決していく」
もちろんそんな活動を英語で行うのは、とっても大変！

まず、英語がしっかり身についていなければできません。
リピートできるだけ、なんとなく読めるだけではダメ。

それに、協調性、自分から関わっていく力、クリエイティブな思考が必須。

そんなに大変なこと、どうやって覚えていくの？
もちろん、一に練習、二に練習！

先生はどんなアクティビティをどう取り入れていくか慎重に計画を立てますが、それは先生の仕事。

子どもたちは、とにかく楽しいアクティビティに懸命に取り組みながら、経験から学んでいきます。

今週のレッスンからほんの少し紹介します。

レベル１（小1）

動物ジェスチャークイズ

子どもたちが順に先生になってクイズをすすめます

What am I?

レベル４（小３）

テキストEnglish Land のディズニーストーリ音読練習。

子どもたちには　'It is' 'Is it' 'It's' などの区別もたいへん。

難しいところは助けあいながら進めます。

合言葉は「きびしくチェック。やさしくアドバイス。」

動物についての会話ゲーム。

Is it a lion?

Yes, it is.

No, it isn't.

笑顔いっぱい。しかも真剣。

ここでもしっかり相手の英語を確認しあいます。

レベル８（中１）

夢の世界旅行の計画を立てます。

どの街にどうやって行ってどんなことをするか・・・。

世界一周する一番面白そうな行程を計画して、

辞書、地図、これまでのプリントなどを参考に英作文。

時間制限を設けて緊張感アップ。

自分の世界旅行計画をお友達と発表しあいます。

「伝える」「理解しようとする」ことを大切に

アイコンタクトを持ちながらしっかりコミュニケーション。

何かと忙しくて、お疲れ気味の子どもたち。

でも、レッスンが終わるときにはみんなすがすがしい笑顔です。

「自立する」ってとても気持ちよくて、嬉しいものなんですね。

先月のJALT国際学会でのBridging the Gapフォーラムのサマリー（英語）をこちらにアップしました。

ＪＡＬＴ役員、小学校で英語教育にたずさわる先生、JETプログラムの先生、大学教授、会社で英語指導にあたる先生などとのパネル・ディスカッションへのJALT児童英語分科会の代表としての参加。

すべて英語で進むフォーラムへの参加は、わたしにとってはフォーマルなディスカッションの経験をつむ貴重な経験でもあります。このような機会をいただいたことに感謝しています。

今後もこのような活動に積極的にそして謙虚に臨み、視野を広げていきたいと思います。

コミュニケーション・ストラテジー Keeping It Going

イングリッシュ・スクエアのティーン英会話クラスでは、グローバル社会での活躍に必須のコミュニケーション力をつけることを第一の目標にレッスンを進めています。

カリキュラム開始から１年半を過ぎたこのクラス（中３～高２）では、大学用テキストを使用して、これまで色々な「コミュニケーション・ストラテジー」を学び、練習してきました。

コミュニケーション・ストラテジーとは・・・

＊意味がわからないときにそれについて尋ねる
＊相手の発言に応じた適切なあいづちをうつ
＊会話が続くように、フォローの質問をする
＊質問に答える際に、会話をより豊かにするようなコメントをつける
＊相手の立場に理解を示した上で、異論をとなえる
＊ぴったりな言葉を知らないときに、それに近い言葉を使ったり例を挙げたりすることで、会話をすすめる
（これは日本人が一番苦手なこと！）

など、コミュニケーションを円滑に進めるために必要なスキルを指します。

これだけのことを外国語ですすめるには本当に大変なことです。
ひとつひとつのストラテジーを意識的に練習し、数々の実践経験をつまなければなりません。

それだけに、会話が続くようになったときの楽しさ、達成感は格別です。

このクラスで昨日会話した内容は・・・

What's the most useful class you've ever taken?
What is your clearest memory of your fist school?
Do you prefer to have only one or two close friends, or many friends? Why?
What do you think are three things that make a friendship strong?
Talk for one minute about an important turning point in your life.

などなど。

３人ずつのグループでどんどん会話が進んで、Stop!といわなければレッスンを終われないほど。
笑顔と学びがいっぱい、あっという間の１時間でした。

そして、ここでひとつ、幼児、児童をお持ちのお母さま、お父さまがたへのお願いです！

まずは、日本語でのコミュニケーション力をしっかりと身につけるように、ご家庭での教育をお願いします。

はだめ。

きちんとしたことば遣い、正しい発声と姿勢で話すよう、促しましょう。

お母さま、お父さまが、きちんとした日本語で、気持ちのよい会話を持つようにしましょう。

子どもたちは、ご両親に「言われる」ことではなく、ご両親の「している」ことから学んでいきます。

そして、子どもたちは、母国語で身につけたコミュニケーション力をそのまま、外国語でのコミュニケーションに活かしていくのです。

I'm going to be one of the panelists of Helping Students Bridge the Gap Forum at JALT International Conference, representing JALT TC (Teaching Children) SIG, this weekend. The forum is to be held from 3:45 to 5:30 on Sunday.

宮村英語奨励賞　受賞おめでとう！

１０月１６日（日）、イングリッシュ・スクエアの中３生３名が宮村英語奨励賞を受賞しました。

きびしい審査（英作文、面接など）をもとに金沢市から特に高いコミュニケーション力を持つ

中３生２０名に授与されるこの賞を勝ち取るには、

自己表現力、批判的思考力、そしてなにより勇気が必要です。

受賞したみなさんは、本校で年長さん、小学１年生のときから楽しく英語を学んできました。

もちろん、大変な努力もしてきました。

その結果として、このような権威ある賞を受賞したみなさんをとても誇りに思います！

まず、スピーチ・ビデオの一部を見て、

Steve Jobsの主張について、自分の成功・失敗体験と関連づけてエッセイを書きます。

そして、ペアになり、お互いの考えをシェアしあいました。

このように、理論的に考え、自己主張を行う活動を通して、

子供たちは1時間、存分に英語を使いながら、コミュニケーション力をつけていきます。

今週のレッスンから・・・

レベル２

自分からお友達に声をかけて

のように食べ物について会話します。

もちろん姿勢とアイコンタクトに気をつけて。

レベル４

What's this? What's that? What are these? What are those?

という一見かんたんそうで実は難しい会話。

やっぱりペアで、協力し合いながら練習します。

レベル６

もうこのレベルになると・・・

Are there any skyscrapers where you live?

Is there a waterfall where you live?

Do you have any glue in your pencil case?

When's Halloween?

などなど色々な構文をひとつのゲームのなかで自由に使いこなします。

そして、ここでもアイコンタクトと姿勢を大切に。

Presentation at ERWC 国際多読学会での講演

Hi,

I had a great time sharing the Three-Stage Reading Program at English Square with all the great teachers gathered at Extensive Reading World Congress in Kyoto last Sunday.

I touched on a bit of theories regarding reading fluency instruction. - see how serious I can be!

and demonstrated one of the most popular picture book based activities at my school.

I've also shown several video clips and photos taken in my classrooms.

The session went very smoothly thanks to the eager-to-learn, fun-loving teachers in the room!

Helping children become fluent and independent readers in our EFL environment is a challenging task, but I trust that it is a worthwhile endeavor for all the kids' teachers!

昨日、国際多読学会にてイングリッシュ・スクエアで開発した３段階のリーディングプログラムについて講演をさせていただきました。

熱心で楽しい先生がたのお力をいただき、読みの流暢さについての理論導入とアクティビティのデモ、そして実際のクラスで撮影したビデオ、写真紹介などで、あっという間の４５分。

一週間に１回のレッスンで子供たちの読みの力をつけるのは容易ではありません。

でも、グローバル社会に羽ばたく子供たちに欠かせない、英語の読解力。
これからも研究を重ねて、世界に通用する読解力をつける指導力をつけていきたいと思います。

Sing! Dance! Learn! with Eric-Sensei

We had a GREAT time with Eric sensei this afternoon!!
Eric Kane sensei is the school owner, teacher trainer, teacher and the producer of Let's Take a Walk (ELF Learning), a music CD for EFL children.

He introduced some of the most popular songs from the CD in a way that all the children and parents can have fun and learn the language at the same time.

Eric-sensei was very surprised to see my students interacting with him very actively with good pronunciation, and I was thrilled to see all the participants' eyes shine!

ELF Learning is now producing his second CD, and I cannot wait to have Eric sensei back once it is released.

ERWC 国際多読学会での講演

I'm doing a presentation titled "What's Beyond the ABC's? - Reading Fluency Instruction for EFL Children" at The First Extensive Reading World Congress on Sunday, September 4th at Kyoto Sangyo University in Kyoto.

What skills do children need to develop before being able to engage in independent and extensive reading? What can we do to promote those skills among children while keeping them motivated?

主体性をはぐくむ活動　Independence and Autonomy

イングリッシュ・スクエアでは「グローバル社会に必要な主体性」をはぐくむために、

自立をうながす活動をたくさん取り入れています。

今週のレッスンではこんな活動をしました！

レベル１クラス

ぬいぐるみや手作りの型紙を使って"My head!"など自己表現！

レベル３クラス

ペアを組んで、テキストの音読練習をしました。

お友達が困っているとき、どうすればいいか・・・協力しあって活動をすすめます。

そして・・・

大好きなおもちゃについて、４つの文を使ってプレゼンテーションしあいました。

もちろん声質、姿勢、視線などに気をつけて！

レベル４クラス

カードゲームでたくさんの動詞を練習した後、

ひとりひとりが「難しいな～と思った言葉」を選んでプリントに書き、

それを来週までに覚えてくることを目標にしました。

レベル５クラス

レベル最後のまとめの問題にひとりひとり取り組んで・・・

ペアで答えあわせをしました。

レベル７クラス

読みの活動で、自分が知りたいと思った言葉をひとつだけ辞書で調べて記録をつけました。

このような活動には、慣れるまで時間がかかります。

でもこのようにして身につけた主体性は、グローバル社会でおおいに力を発揮します！

「もう、先生いなくても大丈夫だよ！」

と言ってくれる日がくるまで、

かわいい子供たちと一緒にがんばりたいと思います！

Learning British Culture　イギリスってどんな国？

At English Square, children had a great time studying English and British culture with a guest teacher, Kathleen-sensei, this afternoon.

What do Harry Potter, Thomas the Tank Engine and Winnie the Pooh have in common?

Yes!
They are all from the UK!

Children engaged in all sorts of activities related to the UK.

And some of them even tried on Kathleen sensei's university graduation hat!

Younger children particularly enjoyed singing a British song and taking a look at real British coins and stamps, The older ones had a great time learning about different flags from the UK.

Kathleen-sensei was very much impressed as children at English Square were very attentive and knew a lot of English words and phrases!

イングリッシュ・スクエアでは今日の午後、イギリス人のゲストティーチャー、キャサリン先生をお迎えして交流レッスンをしました。

ハリーポッター、トーマス、プーさん・・・みんなイギリス出身なんですね。
大きな子どもたちは、イギリスにはたくさんの旗があることも教えていただいて、とってもびっくりしていました。

レッスンではほかに、イギリスの歌を歌ったり、お金や切手を触ってみたり、ゲームをしたり、みんなで仲良く楽しみました。

キャサリン先生は、「イングリッシュスクエアの子どもたちは、みんなとってもよく英語を知っているし、ちゃんと考えながらゲームをしていてすごい！」と感心なさっていました。

Fabulous FAB1! 脳科学についての講演会

I had the honor to do a presentation at FAB1 (First Annual Brain Conference) Kansai on Sunday. It was the first time for me to discuss English teaching from the perspective of brain science, and I had a fabulous time with other presenters and the participants!

In my session, I examined the value of picture book-based instruction referring to recent findings in neuroscience, first discussing the relevant theories and then demonstrating several picture book-based activities.

What are the merits in using picture books in young children's classrooms?

*Presentation of language as a whole (Learning begins with the whole.)
*Formation of episodic memory (Fantasies are real for children.)
*Deep emotional involvement (Where there is a story, there is emotional involvement.)
*Language and opportunities for social interaction (The brain is social.)
*Meaningful repetition (Turning a story into a chant is one of the best ways.)

Here's how we engaged in an activity based on the popular story,"Mrs. Wishy Washy!" In this activity, 'children' act out their version of the story while using multiple senses and their 'social' brains.

And here's how the 'students' worked on an activity based on 'Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?' focusing on the parts of the language and making decisions on what animals they see in their imagination.

You can see in the photos above how much the teachers were emotionally involved in these activities taken directly from my classrooms. And as all the teachers know intuitively, deep emotional engagement is the key in effective learning.

I am recently very much interested in brain-based learning, and discussions with other teachers inspired me further to continue the study!

昨日、FAB１（脳科学と英語教育についての学会）にて、絵本を使った指導を脳科学の見地から考察する講演会をさせていただきました。

絵本を使った子どもたちへの英語指導の利点は・・・

＊ことばの「全体」を意味深いコンテクストで提示できる！
―　脳は全体から部分へと学んでいきます

＊感情の伴う学びを引き起こす！
―　脳は感情のともなうインプットを選別します

＊リアルな記憶を実現する！
―　絵本を通して覚えた言葉はずっと記憶にのこります

イングリッシュ・スクエアでは１９９１年の創設以来ずっと幼児～低学年クラスでは絵本を中心とした指導をしてきました。

今回、英語指導者のみなさんと脳科学についての議論を深める中で絵本中心カリキュラムの有効性を確認し、これからも研鑽を深めてより効果的な指導を行っていきたい・・・と心を新たにしました。

英語の運用力を身につけるには？

イングリッシュ・スクエアの子どもたちは、さまざまなコミュニケーション活動を通して、英語の運用力を身につけています。

絵本を使ったちびっこの活動でもそれは同じ。
イングリッシュ・スクエアでは絵本の暗誦はしません。
音だけ覚えてもそこに深い意味理解がなければ、ことばを身につけることはできないからです。

授業でさまざまな楽しい活動に取り組んだり、宿題でCDを聞いたり練習したりするなかで、絵本のことばがしだいに子どもたちの頭に心にしみこんでいきます。

そしていちばん大切なのは、応用活動。
「あ～ぜんぶ覚えた！次の絵本は何？」
ではコミュニケーション力をつけることは出来ません。

絵本の言葉を使って、自分の考え、思い、イメージを英語で表現します。
ここからが本当の学びといってもよいでしょう。

たとば・・・。

Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? (Bill Martin Jr. Eric Carle) を使った、ミニブック作りと発表。

Mrs. Wishy Washy(Joy Cowley, Elizabeth Fuller) をもとにした表現活動。

Pete the Cat(Eric Litwin, James Dean) を読んだ後に、自分のお気に入りの衣類について発表するプレゼンテーション。

このような応用活動の経験は後々、英語に理論的にアプローチするときに大きな力を発揮します。

英語の運用力は、丸暗記や丸写しなど、一見「体裁の良い」学習では身につけることが出来ません。
子どもたちが意味深い学びに取り組めるよう、しっかりとサポートしていきたいものですね。

７月１０日（日）に兵庫県で開催される脳科学と英語教育についてのコンファレンス　
Brain Day: Connecting Neuroscience with EFL in Japan （JALT学会主催）で講演をさせていただくことになりました。

"Story-Based Activities that Stimulate Children's Brains"
と題して絵本を使った活動について脳科学の見地から考察するセッション。
参加者は、実際にアクティビティをすることにより、その楽しさと効果を体験します。

このコンファレンスの招待講演者は

という素晴らしい顔ぶれ。

収益はすべて東日本大震災の被害を受けた子どもたちに贈られます。

I'm going to do a presentation at the conference Brain Day: Connecting Neuroscience with EFL in Japan in Hyogo on Sunday, July 10.

In this 40-minute session titled 'Story-Based Activities that Stimulate Children's Brains,' I will discuss the benefit of story-based activities from the perspective of brain-based learning, and the participants will actually experience some of the most popular classroom-piloted activities at my school.

All the proceeds from this event are going to a charity to save children who were affected by Higashi Nihon Earthquake.

In this article, I briefly discussed what sort of lessons we are doing and why, referring to the Four Strands theory advocated by I.S.P. Nation. In many of the high schools in Japan, most of the instruction time is spent on 'language focused learning' and very little time is devoted to 'meaning-based input,' 'meaning-based output,' or 'fluency development.' Because of this, I focus heavily on the use of language rather than the form at my school.

I also shared one of the most recent video-based lessons with teenage students as an example.

Ooh! Groovy!!

At English Square, kids are now having fun with the book titled "Pete the Cat" (written by Eric Litwin, illustrated by James Dean).

This is a REALLY fun and groovy picture book about a cat who loves his white shoes, and doesn't care if they turn into red, blue, brown or even they get wet! To him, life is way too cool to sweat over small stuff. How cool!

It has repetitive language in the story, and EFL children can easily join in saying, "Oh, no!"and "Goodness, no!"

How Many? コミュニケーションで文法練習

先週は動物の絵のついたカードを使ってペアでHow many...?の練習。
ポイントは単数形・複数形を正確に使い分けること。
そしてもちろん、お友達と協力しながら楽しくコミュニケーションをはかること。

My latest project, Doraemon Hajimeteno Eigo Jiten, is going to hit the shelves on June 17! This children's dictionary includes a picture dictionary, English-Japanese dictionary and Japanese-English dictionary in one package.

It also has two CDs with the recording of all the head words and sample sentences.

The word selection has been done with a special care to make the dictionary catered to the needs and interests of children.

At English Square I prepare my students for independent reading while they are still very young - as young as five years old.

While they are in K-G2, they mainly enjoy being read to and learn the basic principles in phonics.
During the elementary school years, they gradually accumulate experiences in Shared Reading where they learn English intonation, text convention and story development, etc. and in Guided Reading where they expand vocabulary and raise awareness on grammar.

I also integrate dictionary skills instruction into the four-skills curriculum in G5-G6 classes. Students learn not only to find a definition of a given word, but also to consider which word in text matters for overall comprehension and also to guess and find the definition of the word that matches with how it is used in the context.

My students are ready for Extensive Reading as it is generally defined when they are in early-teens. I can then assess how much the literacy instruction from K to G6 has been effective.

It is a true joy to see them read for enjoyment in their own unique ways!

海外の文化についての見識を広げるイングリッシュスクエアの交流レッスン。

きょうはアメリカ人のジェフ先生をゲストティーチャーにお招きして、ネイティブアメリカンの文化について学びました。
まず、パワーポイントでジェフ先生からネイティブアメリカンの歴史や生活についてのミニレッスン。

ハリウッドの人気俳優、ジョニー・ディップやキャメロン・ディアスもネイティブアメリカンの血をひいているそうです。

そして、ネイティブアメリカンのおまもり、Dreamcatcherを作りました。

Dreamcatcherをベッドの近くに飾っておくと悪い夢を見ずにすむんですって！

本物は木や鳥の羽を使って作ります。

そして、きょうのちびっこたちはアメリカから輸入したキットを使ってこんなDreamcatcherを作りました。

ひもをたくさんの穴に通して、ビーズと羽をつけて・・・とちょっと難しい工作でしたが、みんなとっても上手にできましたね！

すてきなDreamcatcher、ベッドの近くに飾ってくださいね。

At English Square, children explored the world of Native Americans! It is very rare for Japanese children to learn this aspect of American culture, and I was very glad that my students had this opportunity.

After getting the overview of its history and culture, children enjoyed making 'dreamcatchers' using a kit imported from the U.S.A.

Dream catchers originally made of twigs, feathers and beads are said to catch bad dreams for children. If a child hangs one in their bedroom, the child only dreams a good dream. Isn't it nice?

Hi,

I had a fabulous time sharing my ideas on teaching English at elementary school in Hakodate.

This event was organized and sponsored by Hakodate University and Hakodate Shirayuri High School, and we had a great mix of audience - classroom teachers at elementary schools, JH/SH English teachers, Univ. professors and the BOE officers.

They were all very fun and enthusiastic, and they learned how to teach English by engaging in various activities - just the same way as children 'learn by doing' in class.

Thank you very much for all the teachers and officers who have contributed to this very special event!

先週土曜日、函館大学および函館白百合中学高等学校の共催によるセミナーで、小学校英語指導についての講演をさせていただきました。

イングリッシュ・スクエアでは、ネイティブ向け絵本をレッスンによく取り入れています。
今月、ちびっこたちのクラスで読んでいるのはこの名作。

Yo! Yes? Chris Raschka 著　（スカラスティック刊）

人種のことなる男の子ふたりの出会いの物語。
"Yo!" "Yes?" "Not much."などとっても短いことばの会話を交わしながら、お互いを知り、共感し、仲良しに・・・。

クラスで読み聞かせをすると、"No friends."のところで、みんななんともいえない悲しい表情になります。
そして、読み終わると必ず出るのがこのことば。

「あ～、お友達ができてよかった！」

英語を始めてほんの数年のこどもたちでもすぐ自分で読めるようになる素敵な絵本。
コルデコット賞受賞作品ですので、図書館でもよく出会います。

お天気のいい日に図書館にでかけて、お子さんと探してみてくださいね。

At English Square, we often use picture books written for native speaking children.

This month, young children have been having fun with the book, Yo! Yes? written by Chris Raschka. In this amazingly simple and vibrant story, two boys with different ethnic backgrounds engage in a very simple conversation where they turn from strangers to friends.

My students always show very sad look when one of the boys in the story says, 'No friends.' And in the end, they look as happy as the boys in the story!

Happy Easter! イースターレッスンで異文化理解

Happy Easter!

At English Square this morning, we had a lot of fun, learning how Christians celebrate Easter, listening to a Easter story and dyeing Easter Eggs.

The story we've read today was Ollie's Easter Eggs by Oliver Dunrea. It is a lovely and humorous story about a gosling that steals his friends' brightly colored Easter Eggs, and prepares a surprise for them.

To make their own Easter Eggs, children first drew simple pictures and patterns on the egg shells with crayons.

Then, they dipped the eggs into a bowl of dyeing liquid of their choice. It was easy enough for young children to handle by themselves, and I saw their faces lit up when their eggs were done as beautiful as the ones in the story book! !

イングリッシュスクエアでは、イースターレッスンを行いました。

まず、イースターのお祝いの習慣についてEaster （D.F.Marx著）でお勉強。

そして、クレヨンとアメリカのキットを使ってひとつづつ卵を染めていきました。

卵が乾くのを待つ間はおはなしタイム。Ollie's Easter Eggs（Oliver Dunrea著）というガチョウの赤ちゃんがイースターエッグをめぐって引き起こす騒動のストーリーを楽しみました。

きれいに染め上がった卵をながめる子どもたちの目はキラキラ。とっても素敵なレッスンになりました。

Assessment イングリッシュスクエアの評価手法

イングリッシュ・スクエア、レベル５のクラスでは今週、当レベル仕上げの「評価レッスン」を行いました。

評価はカリキュラムの目標に沿ったものでなければいけません。英語の運用力やコミュニケーション力を重視したカリキュラムでの学習効果は、英語検定のような英語知識を測る「ペーパー試験」で評価することは不可能です。ですので、本校では独自の方法で評価を行っています。

この評価レッスンではまず、各自、自分がどこの国にいて、何時で、何をしているかという架空の話を作りインタビューしあいました。場所、時間、活動について会話することがこのレベルの目標のひとつだったからです。インタビューの間、私は子どもひとりひとりのコミュニケーション力を評価するために、英語を正しく使えているかだけではなく、主体的に動くことができるか、声ははっきりしているか、アイコンタクトはとれているかなどを注意深い観察をもとに記録していきます。

インタビューのあとにはリラックスした雰囲気の中でインタビュー内容について話し合いましたが、これはクリエイティブに言葉を使う力や態度を評価するためです。

そして最後にテキストEnglish Landの「期末テスト」に取り組みました。このテストで測れる力は、概要を聞き取る力、詳細部を聞き取る力、フォニックス、文法。答え合わせは講師のリードのもと、子どもたちが自分自身で進めます。これは、子どもたちの学力を長期的に伸ばすために必須の学習スキルを磨くため。８８％から１００％の正答率でした。

このレッスンの観察に基づいて集めた評価情報は、今後、子どもたちのニーズにあったプログラムを作成するために活用していきます。

いつも子どもたちに寄りそい、子どもたちとともに成長していきたいと願いつつ。

In a Level 5 class this week, students have worked on the end-of-the-level assessment activities. As you all may agree, one of the key elements in assessing a learner's learning is to ensure the match between the curriculum goal and test content. We just cannot use a pencil and paper test and give them a score - learning is more than just paper work!

Here's how I assessed the students' learning through activities.

First of all, students engaged in a conversation activity where they ask and answer where they are, in their imagination, what time it is, and what they are doing. As a pre-interview activity, they also wrote sentences that they were going to use during the interview.Talking about location, time and daily activities with confidence and proper communication manner, was one of the goals of their program. During this mix-and-mingle activity I very carefully observed their language use (pronunciation, fluency in speech, choice of vocabulary, grammar), attitude (willingness to have a go, asking for clarification, helping a friend) and communication manner (eye contact, tone of voice, posture, etc.), and took notes.

After this activity, I had oral interaction with individual students in a relaxed manner to further assess their comprehension and production in a less structured environment.

Finally, the students took the term test included in English Land 3 that they have been using throughout the program. The test covers listening for gist, listening for details, phonics, vocabulary and grammar.

Before wrapping up the session, we went over the materials in the test together, and each student wrote down his/her own score on the test sheet. This is an important process where they reflect upon their own learning, and to learn study skills. The test scores ranged from 88% to 100%.

Now, it is my responsibility to utilize the information I've gathered through this session for the development of the program catered to the students' needs.

Back to School! 笑顔がいっぱい

Hi,

The new school year has kicked off at English Square this week. I have been very excited to see my lovely students after a few weeks' break. It is amazing that some of them looked much more 'grownup' than they used to do just before the break!

In the photo below you can see some G2-3 students talking about their families using English Land (Pearson Longman), the textbook that I co-authored. It was funny that three of the moms had the same name. What do you think it was? See below for the answer!

Here's my bilingual article on team teaching at public elementary school published in JALT TC SIG TLC Newsletter Vol. 15-4. In this small essay, presented on pages 26-28, I've looked into the issue from the view point of ALT's, and discussed seven keys to successfully collaborating with homeroom teachers.

Hope many teachers will find this article helpful, with Gaikokugo Katsudo (Foreign Language Experience) becoming a compulsory area of study at all the elementary schools in Japan!

Hi,

I had the honor to do a workshop on school management at ETJ Ishikawa Group Workshop last Sunday.

In the midst of the so-called "Shogakkou Eigo Boom," sustaining an eikaiwa business is becoming a more challenging task than ever for all the school owners in Japan. In this workshop, where I shared what I've learned through trial and error, the audience members were all eager to hear my stories and also to share their own unique ideas with others.

We need to be creative at a time like this, and it becomes more fun and easier when we put our heads together!

3月13日（日）ETJ石川支部でスクール運営についてのワークショップをさせていただきました。

I had the honor to present at Pearson Kirihara Spring Teacher's Conference yesterday. It was so much fun to share my teaching ideas with the audience. The First Step 読み練習はじめの一歩！

イングリッシュ・スクエアでは、すべての活動を子どもにとって意味深い文脈（コンテクスト）で行い学習効果を高めています。

昨日の１年生クラスでは、みんなの大好きなディズニーのお話の単語をひとつひとつ指でなぞりながら音読する練習をしました。暗記して「空読み」するのと違ってひとつひとつの単語をしっかり指で追って音読をするのはとても難しいのですが、子ども達はとても楽しんでチャレンジします。

なぜでしょう。

それはおはなしそのものが子どもにとって楽しく意味深いものだからです。

そして、このようにしっかり読めるのは、入門期から会話練習と並行してフォニックスの基礎学習にじっくりと取り組んでいるからです。

おはなしはEnglish Land 1 (Pearson Longman　中村麻里　清野明子共著)収録のものです。

At English Square we value putting every practice in a meaningful context for children. In this video, G1 students are giving their first shot at reading aloud while tracing the words in text. This is not an easy task to do in a foreign language unlike reading aloud a story from memory, but they genuinely enjoyed the challenge. Why? The story is fun and meaningful for them. We never make children read aloud a story that they cannot relate to.

Hi,

I am going to have another great opportunity to share my ideas with teachers at Longman Kirihara Spring Teacher's Conference 2011 on Sunday, Feb.27! In this session titled 'What's Beyond the ABC's: Reading Fluency Instructing for Children' I am going to discuss how we can integrate reading fluency instruction into our daily 4-skills lessons in a way that is fun and engaging for children. This is my area of interest so I am very excited about this session! There are numerous sessions held on the day, and I am also looking forward to learning from other authors and teacher trainers.

What Can You See? ちびっこもプレゼンテーション！

In the Level 1 classes this week, we are wrapping up The Weather & Nature unit of the program where we used a picture book, Up in the Sky (Pearson Longman). Our learning units usually complete with a self-expression activity where children express their own ideas however simple it might be.

You can see in the photo that K-G1 students talking about what they have drawn on their worksheet, using the sentence structure 'I can see...'

As always, children have fun while learning how to communicate their thoughts in English at English Square!

Nellie's ELT Festival　講演：小学校英語成功の鍵！

Hi,

I had a great time on Sunday, Jan. 30 at Nellie's ELT Festival! I shared some ideas on teaching English at elementary schools using my textbook series, Hop, Step, Jump into English (RIC).

In this session I focused on the differences in teaching English at private eikaiwa schools and teaching the same subject at public schools, and discussed three keys to successful instruction at elementary schools. The keys are: natural progression from input to output, mentally engaging activities, and the use of various group formations. With these keys in mind, teaching children in a large class will be a lot easier and more fun.

I was very happy meeting people from different walks of life such as a university professor who came all the way from Shikoku, a business person who is looking into ways to train new English teachers, and a teacher who is teaching English to children for international understanding. These experiences made the trip worthwhile - even though I was stranded in Osaka for a few days due to the heavy snow in Hokuriku!

１月３０日（日）、ネリーズＥＬＴフェスティバル大阪にて、小学校英語指導についての講演にて、著書Hop, Step, Jump into Englishシリーズを使った活動を紹介させていただきました。

今回、まずフォーカスしたのは、英会話スクールでの指導と小学校での指導の違い―指導者、動機、クラスサイズなど。これらの違いを踏まえたうえで、小学校英語指導に大切な３つの鍵を発表しました。小学校英語指導の成功の鍵は、（１）インプットからアウトプットへの自然な導き、（２）生徒に考えさせる活動、（３）色々なタイプのグループ編成の活用。このポイントをおさえておくだけで、簡単な準備で楽しく授業をすることができます。（もちろんそれによって子ども達の学びも最大限に引き出せます）

日曜夕刻には北陸の大雪のせいで北陸本線の電車が完全ストップ。火曜日まで帰宅できないというアクシデントに見舞われましたが、たくさんの情熱溢れる先生方と意見を交換し、充実した週末をすごさせていただきました！

自律を促すテスト Test for Autonomous Learning

Hi,

Autonomous learning can be promoted through tests - if the instructor designs it with the aim of fostering responsibility and prepares the students for the test with this aim in mind.

In a lesson today, students did a test on over 30 verb phrases which they had practiced through various activities over several months. First, individual students tested their knowledge by themselves using a list of verb phrases. Then, they worked in pairs to see how much their partners have learned the target language. At this stage, they were expected to work cooperatively, not to compete against each other. Finally, we checked which pair has gone over the most phrases, and acknowledged the pair with a big applause!

At every stage, the children were expected to act autonomously, and actually they really enjoyed doing all this!

今日のレッスンでは、動詞句のテストをしました。

このテストには、自律学習を促すという大切な目的もあります。まず、ひとりで工夫して３０以上の動詞句をおさらいし、次にペアになり、お互いの理解度をチェックします。ここで大切なことはお互いの学習のプラスになるように助け合うこと。そして最後にどのペアが一番多くの動詞句を復習できたかを数えました。

このような学習は子どもには無理と考える指導者もいますが、自律を促す活動をひごろのレッスンで計画的に進め、目的にふさわしい手順でテストを行えば、子どもたちもしっかりと応えてくれます。

そして、子どもたちもこのような活動が大好き。最後には、一番たくさんの動詞句を復習できたペアにみんなが拍手をおくっていました！

予想しながら聴く力　Lemons Are Not Red!

Hi,

One of the most important comprehension skills is 'prediction,' the skill to predict what you are going to hear and read. In the level 3 class today, we used a beautiful and magical picture book with some cutout pages, Lemons Are Not Red, written by Laura Vaccario Seeger.

When you open this book, you first see a picture of a red lemon. Turn a page, and you will see a yellow lemon on the left page and a red apple on the right page. Then, if you turn another page, you will see a purple carrot. Can you guess what you will see on the following two pages? Right! You will see an orange carrot and a purple eggplant! The story goes on like this, and concludes with 'Good night!'

My students enjoyed reading this book while predicting what happens next and having conversation about the illustrations.

「次に何が起こるか予想しながら聴く」―とっても大切なリスニングのスキルです。

きょうのレベル３クラスでは、美しく不思議な穴開きのある絵本 Lemons Are Not Red を使って、このスキルの練習をしました。英語の読み聞かせを聴きながら、次のページにどんな絵があるか予想し、自分の考えを伝え、ページをめくって予想があっているかどうかを確認します。

そして活動の間じゅう、"What do you think the next picture will be?" "Was your guess correct?" など読み手から投げかけられる英語の意味も予測しながら会話をすすめて行きます。

小学校英語についての講演 Workshop for School Teachers

きょう午前、金沢市立木曳野小学校で、小中一貫英語教育に関する講演会をさせていただきました。

今回のワークショップは、ＳＬＡ（第二言語習得）、ＴＥＹＬ（早期英語教育）、心理学などの理論にふれ、日頃のクラス運営を振り返り、今後の方策をディスカッションするという内容。とても熱心なインストラクターに恵まれた小学校だけに、クラス担任の先生方もとても前向きに楽しくタスクに取り組んでくださいました。

先生方からは「わたしたちの指導って、結構いいとこまでいってるんじゃない？」という声や、「じゃあ、このフレームワーク（ポール・ネイションのThe Four Strands）を使って授業をして改善して行って、木曳野小学校独自の新しいモデルを作りましょう！」という頼もしいコメントも聴かれました。

二時間で英語指導の柱となる理論にふれて振り返るという、やや急ぎ足のセッションでしたが、このワークショップが先生方の今後の指導に少しでも役に立てば嬉しく思います。

I had the honor to do a workshop on English teaching at Kibikino Elementary School this morning. The school's program is lead by a very enthusiastic and knowledgeable instructor, and I was very much impressed by the enthusiasm by classroom teachers at the school.

In this workshop, the teachers have reviewed some fundamental theories on SLA, TEYL and psychology, and reflected upon their daily teaching and teacher beliefs. Some teachers have suggested that they apply the theories in class, assess the outcome and improve their teaching further. It was very rewarding to hear such positive comments!

雪はたのし・・・Let it Snow!

Well...while grown-ups are feeling rather blue about the snow already, I can hear children shouting 'let it snow!' I LOVE to see children playing in the snow - making a snowman, having a snow ball fight, and merely stomping their feet on the snow with a big smile.

In the Level 1 class yesterday, we enjoyed reading the story Snow by Uri Shulevits, and making a paper snowflake. Children loved the simple and heart-warming story about a boy and his dog dancing in the snow with some of the Mother Goose characters, and learned some snow-related vocabulary and phrases through interactive reading. During the craft project, they practiced to follow directions in English such as, 'take out your scissors from your bag,' 'fold the paper,' and 'cut the paper with your scissors this way.' A nice surprise was that they started to sing a clean-up song while cleaning up after the work. What a joy it was!

子どもたちは雪が大好き。ちょっとウンザリ気味の大人たちを横目に、子どもたちの雪遊びの声が響き渡ります。

昨日のレベル１のクラスでは、雪をテーマにしたレッスンを行いました。まず、SNOW(Uri Shulevits作）という絵本で、雪が大好きな男の子と犬、マザーグースの世界にふれ、雪の結晶のペーパークラフトに取り組みました。絵本の活動、クラフト活動を通して、生きた英語に触れ、お片づけのときには、自然にClean Up Songを口ずさみ始めた子どもたち。

子どもたちはいつも楽しい活動を通して言葉を学んでいきます。

楽しさいっぱいクリスマスレッスン　Merry Christmas!

In Level 2 Class we did a review lesson with the theme of Christmas to enjoy the festive mood of this holiday season.

First ,we reviewed some winter clothes vocabulary using a picture dictionary, a song and a gesture activity. Then we read 'Get Dressed, Santa!' written by Tomie dePaola. This is a fun and lovely picture book where Santa gets panicky while dressing up for his duty - needing one final run to the bathroom!

Finally each child made a Christmas card for her mom using a set of Dressing Up Santa Sticker, practicing the phrases 'Put on ~, Santa.' It was really nice to see, at the final lesson of the year, that all the students showed remarkable concentration throughout the lesson and went home with a big smile.

きょうのレベル２クラスでは、クリスマスについての復習レッスンを行いました。まず、絵辞典、歌、ジェスチャーゲームで、冬の衣服について復習。そして、サンタさんがお着替え中にトイレに行きたくなって楽しい騒動を起こすおはなしGet Dressed, Santa!のインタラクティブ・リーディング。

最後にサンタのDress Up Stickerセットを使って、お母さんあてのクリスマスカードを作りました。もちろんカードを作りながら Put on ~, Santa!など英語も楽しく練習。笑顔がいっぱいのレッスンになりました。

教育的なゲームとは　What's in a Game?

Hi,

One of the most frequently asked questions from teachers and parents is: Do you play games in class?
Well, my answer to this question is YES, with the capital letters.

Children love games, and they show incredible concentration when they are having fun playing a game! Why not use the format that increases our students' concentration when we want them to attain new skills and information?

BUT... a word of caution here: Do NOT implement a game only to please children. Good games in language classrooms are the ones which compel the children to focus BOTH on the sound and meaning of the language used.

In the photo above, my students are practicing to talk about a monster using a board game taken from English Land Level 3 Teacher's Book (Pearson Longman), which I co-authored. From their point of view, they are having fun talking about an ugly monster. From a linguistic view, they are practicing to use a third singular verb 'has' and body parts vocabulary through the description of the monster. From a social perspective, they are learning to cooperate with their classmates to complete the task successfully - in a peaceful manner.

There are a lot of benefits in a simple game than meets the eye!

「先生はレッスンでゲームをしますか」このような質問をよく先生方から受けます。答えは、「もちろん！」

ゲームをしているときの子どもたちは夢中になって言葉を使います。でも、指導者としては、「子どもたちに言葉の意味に注意を払わせるようなゲームかどうか」ということをいつも念頭においておかなければなりません。決して子どもたちを喜ばすだけのためにゲームをしないようにしましょう。

上の写真では子どもたちは私が共著したEnglish Land Level 3 Teacher's Book（ピアソン・ロングマン）から抜粋したゲームをしています。モンスターについて英語で話す練習をするこの活動で、子どもたちは三人称単数の構文と体の部位をあらわす語彙を練習しながら、お友達と協力してタスクをすすめることを学びます。

子どもたちにとっては「あ～楽しかった」でも、実はとてもたくさんの教育的意義が隠されています。

Thinking Outside the Box! JALT国際会議での講演

Hi,

I did a presentation at JALT International Conference yesterday. The conference was perfectly organized, and I would like to say a big thank-you to everyone at JALT Jr who made me feel truly welcomed. The conference theme was 'Thinking Outside the Box' and I discussed and demonstrated a very unique and innovative reading program at English Square. The feedback from teachers and researchers were truly inspiring and insightful! As you can see in the photos, YL's teachers are really serious about having fun!

昨日、名古屋で開催された2010年度JALT国際会議で講演をさせていただきました。会議のテーマ、「創造～枠を超えた発想」にそって、イングリッシュ・スクエアが独自に開発したリーディング指導についてのセッション。

Readers' Theater アメリカ式音読練習

At English Square, we value children's confidence and enjoyment in using English. In this video, you can see the children engaging in Readers' Theater, a technique often used in American elementary schools to engage children in repeated oral reading and to nurture interest and confidence in performing their reading in front of their friends. The material used here is English Land 3, which I co-authored for English learners in Asia.

Think, Think, Think!　考える＝学ぶ

At English Square, the balanced approach in instruction and thinking are highly valued. In Level 5 class yesterday, students engaged in an activity where they read text, figured out the meaning independently, and mimed according to their understanding. They finally confirmed their understanding by watching the song video uploaded on Youtube. As homework, they were assigned to draw an illustration that matches with the script. Lots of thinking is involved in the lessons at English Square. The children are always busy *thinking* not parroting!

イングリッシュスクエアでは、バランスの良い技能、考える力の養成を大切にしています。歌もただ歌うだけではありません。

昨日のレッスンでは、まず歌の歌詞を読んで、自分で意味を考えて振り付けをし、それからビデオを見て意味を確認するという活動をしました。そして、歌詞を音読して意味にあう絵を描くことが宿題となり、ここでまた子どもたちは歌の意味を考える機会を持ちます。

英語の「まねをする」だけでは学びはうまれません。イングリッシュスクエアの子どもたちはいつも考えることに大忙しです！

Saint Nicholas Day セント・ニコラス・デーについて学ぼう！

Children at English Square had a great time with Sophie-sensei from Belgium today, learning about her country and Saint Nicholas Day. St. Nicholas Day is a holiday celebrated on December 6 in Belgium and several other European countries. It is similar to Christmas, but there are some interesting differences: St. Nicholas comes to town from Spain on a boat, and then rides a horse to deliver presents to children. The most common gifts from St. Nicolas are candy, chocolate and mandarins.

In the photos below, you can see my students hearing stories about St. Nicholas Day from Sophie-sensei and making a paper mitre (saint's hat) using colored paper, sticker, crayons and cotton balls.

イングリッシュ・スクエアでは、今日、ベルギー出身のソフィー先生をお迎えして、ベルギーの文化とセント・ニコラス・デーについて学びました。セント・ニコラス・デーはベルギーで毎年12月6日にお祝いされる、クリスマスのような行事です。セント・ニコラスは、船に乗ってベルギーにやってきて、馬にのって子どもたちのプレゼントを配ります。プレゼントはキャンディー、チョコレート、みかん（そう、日本のみかんと同じです！）など。上の写真では、子どもたちがソフィーさんからベルギーについて教えて頂き、セント・ニコラスのかぶるマイターという帽子を作っています。最後にみんな並んで、はい、ポーズ！

Reading is Fun!

イングリッシュ・スクエアでは、子どもたちが楽しみながらリーディング力をつけられるように、色々な工夫をしています。この活動では、自分の声がよく聞こえるようなデバイスを使って音読の練習をしています。真剣そのもの。熱気ムンムン。いつもレッスン終了時には「え～、もう終わり～？」と子どもたちの声が響きます。

At English Square, children develop reading fluency through various fun activities. In this photo, you can see them use a simple device to hear their own voices clearly. Time passes very quickly when they are concentrating on their study, and it makes my day when they yell, 'Oh, no! Do we have to stop now?' at the end of a lesson.

勉強の秋を迎え、11月の学会発表、講演会に向けて、リサーチ、パワーポイント作りに励んでいます。11月21日（日）のJALT国際会議では、リーディング・フルーエンシーについての発表と、基調講演者の通訳を担当し、11月28日（日）のELT Kansai Expoでは小学校英語教育について講演します。

教室で子どもたちから学んだことを、学会や講演会で発表し、そこで得たものを教室での指導に還元する。わたしにとって、とても大切な学びのプロセスです。

I'm now gearing up for my presentations in November, shuffling through some research paper and making Power Point slides. One of them is a presentation on reading fluency instruction at JALT International Conference on Sunday, Nov.21. Reading instruction is one of the areas that I feel very passionate about, and I am sure that I am going to learn a lot by exchanging ideas with some of the greatest teachers in this field at my session. I am also working as an interpreter at a Q & A session with a plenary speaker as I did at the last year's conference. The other one is at ELT Kansai Expo on Sunday, the 28. At this conference, I am going to discuss teaching English at public elementary schools.

2010年10月16日、イングリッシュ・スクエアの中3生ふたりが、金沢市より宮村英語奨励賞の表彰を受けました。受賞率8倍という狭き門にも関わらず一次試験（リーディング、ライティングと文法）、二次試験（スピーキングと積極性）を見事にクリア。何とも嬉しいのは、ふたりとも受験後に「面接テスト楽しかった～！」と報告してくれたことです。5人の試験官、ビデオを前にしての面接を楽しめるとは！真のコミュニケーション力がついていることの証ですね。おめでとうございます！

Two of my G9 students were awarded the Miyamura English Encouragement Award this month. They passed the first stage (reading, writing and grammar) and the second stage (speaking and attitude) with flying colors! What made me really happy was that both of them enjoyed the interview test - with five teachers and a video camera sitting in front of them. I am really proud of them!

In the Level 5 class yesterday, we studied about some interesting living things, such as a newt, x-ray fish and vulture. Children LOVE to explore the world through English.

きょう、レベル５クラスでいよいよリーディングプログラムが始まりました。好きな絵本を選んでひとりで読む・・・なんて素敵な気分なんでしょう！このプログラムは多読（Extensive Reading）のコンセプトを元に日本の子どもたち向けにEnglish Squareが独自に開発したもので、読みの流暢さを向上しながら語彙も豊かにし、自律・自立学習に必要なスキルを身につけていきます。一番大切なのは、その過程を楽しみ、能動的に学びに取り組むこと。1年後、どんな本を読めるようになっているか、楽しみですね！

The Level 5 students at English Square started the reading program Reading Race today. In this program, based on Extensive Reading and further developed for early readers in Japan, children not only develop their reading fluency but also expand vocabulary and acquire study sills which help them become independent and autonomous learners. Of course we have fun while doing all these at English Square!

きょうの小１クラスでは、The Wheels on the Busの絵本を使ってリスニングクイズにチャレンジ。"Can you find a woman who is holding a basket full of cupcakes? " （カップケーキのいっぱい入ったバスケットを持っている女の人を見つけてごらん） " I see a cat running after a mouse. Which page am I looking at?" （猫がねずみを追いかけているよ。何ページかな？）のような先生の問いかけを聴いて、子どもたちは競い合うように該当するイラストを探し当てました。

このような問いかけには、関係代名詞や形容詞句など、中学校英語を超えた文法が含まれていますが、子どもたちは素晴らしいリスニング力と推測力で英語をそのまま理解します。そして、このようにして身につけた「話し言葉」を、将来、読解や英作文のような「書き言葉」のリソース（資源）として活用するのです。いつもワクワク、楽しいイングリッシュ・スクエアのレッスンです！

At English Square, we value the input of natural and meaningful language. Today, we did a listening quiz based on the book, The Wheels on the Bus. I asked them some questions about the illustrations in the book, and students competed to find the illustration described. In Teen Eikaiwa Classes at English Square, the main goal is to make them WANT TO use English for communication. What do I need to do to accomplish this goal? Guiding them through the process of deciding what to write, putting the thoughts together using mind-mapping, writing an essay, sharing their writing with friends and asking questions to each other for more information. Last week, they wrote and talked about how they enjoyed their summer vacation. See how much teenagers enjoy communicating with one another with a little help!

Some of my students who have participated in the event, Patricia's Story Shower, have completed their artwork and brought it to their regular classes. The sea collage was based on the story, 'Where Are My Stripes?' and the bug magnet idea was taken from the story, 'Princess Lizzie,' both authored by Patricia Oe. Can you see the excitement on the children's faces? I thank their mommy and daddy for their continuing support for their learning enormously.

The children and their parents at English Square had a great time at Patricia's Story Shower last Sunday. Patricia Oe, one of the most respected picture book authors based in Japan, told two of her stories, 'Princess Lizzie' and 'Where Are My Stripes?', and did several fun and creative activities based on the stories. Children particularly enjoyed making paper clay magnets and sea collage using various materials such as colored paper, cloth, strings and even sea weeds!

All the children at English Square who took the STEP Jr. received a GREAT result today: all of them, 30 in total, got over 80/100 and some even got 100. They were over the moon, and that made me feel real happy!

At English Square, Level 1 students are now wrapping up their program with Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? (Bill Martin Jr. and Eric Carl) Here, you can see them practicing the target language pattern, 'Yuko, Yuko, What Do You See?' using a large Brown Bear Cube. My American friend, Barbara, gave me the beautiful fabric, and a Japanese lady made the die using the fabric. How fortunate I am having such kind and generous friends!

Celebrating the 4th of July with Craft and Music

Hi,

We celebrated the 4th of July with an American guest teacher, Creighton-sensei, this afternoon. Yeah, it was a bit early, but it was fun all the same!
All the children made their own firework artwork using black craft paper and shiny colored paper, and wrote a message plus their names. Children learned some vocabulary related to the celeberation, and Creighton-sensei performed 'This is Your Land' in one of the sessions as well. Hope children will remember this day for many years to come!

Visit to a Montessori school in Boston, Mass.

During my stay in Boston in March, I visited Kingsley Pre-School and Elementary School, a Montessori school in downtown Boston. The principals welcomed me with open arms, and all the teachers there took the time to explain their teaching principles to me. I also had the good fortune to observe several classes, e.g. a science experiment (K-Level) and anthropologic study (G1-G3). What struck me the most was the level of motivation each child had for learning. During a recess at pre-school, the children were allowed to choose what they wanted to do. Can you imagine what they did? Most of the children were working on a learning task independently while a few chidlren ate a snack quietly at a table! If it were in a conventaional Japanese classroom, most of the children would jump onto snacks. It was also amazing how children paid close attention to what a teacher said. When they had something to say, they raised their hands quietly,waiting for the teacher to call on a child. And once it became the time to present their ideas in small groups, they showed remarkable creativity and cooperation.

I have been integrating some principles from Montessori education such as choice, cooperative learning and discipline for several years. Now I see that I have a lot more to learn!

TESOL Conference in Boston

Hope everybody has had a nice spring break! I took advantage of the 2-week break at my school, and took a trip to Boston to attend TESOL Conference from March 24 to March 27. What a huge conference it was! More than 10,000 teachers gathered from all over the world for their professional development. The highlight, for me, was the plenary speech by Dr. Howard Garder, the most influencial pscyhologist in the field of education in our era. He argued that people need to have five minds to excel in and contribute to the society in the future: the disciplinary, synthesizing, creating, respectful, and ethical minds. (Refer to 'Five Minds for the Future' written by Howard Gardner for details.) It will be one of my missions to cultivate these minds in every child at my school! All the other workshops that I attended discussed, in one way or another, the importance of a learner-centered approach in English language classrooms. With hundred pages of handouts and notes, I've got a lot of 'homework' to do in the coming months!

Learn about France with Julien-sensei

Hi,

At English Square, we had wonderful sessions with Julien-sensei from France this afternoon. Children were intrigued by how different and similar, at the same time, France and Japan are! Perhaps the biggest surprise for children was that French people do NOT play baseball. They were also amazed by the speed of TGV when watching a video clip where TGV ran above the speed of 550 kms per hour! Wow! That was awesome! Children also learned some historical places, school life and, of course, food in France. Hope these photos capture the excitement of the children.

A Fun Day in Nagoya!

I visited Nagoya for a presentation at Pearson Longman Kids Tour Nagoya, and had a great day!

The teachers were very energetic, enthusiastic and fun. I figured that the teachers were very much interested in the ways to build a trusting relationship with their students' parents. I am starting a column in the monthly magazine, Kodomo Eigo (ALC) this April, and am looking forward to sharing more ideas along this theme in it. What Can You Do?

At English Square we value self-expression more than anything else. This philosophy is backed by the belief that children learn English best when they use it as a tool for communicating their own thoughts and feelings. In a class for G3 students this Monday, the students made a presentation on what they can and cannot do, using the verb phrases that they had learned in the last couple of months. They all looked proud and happy while giving a speech in front of their peers! A nice addition was the positive written comments from their parents on their work. Most of the parents made comments on the content of the presentation rather than on the children's English use. This shows that the parents also enjoyed communicating with their children through their work!

Nellie's Kids English Festival in Osaka

Hi,

I had a great time at Nellie's Kids English Festival in Osaka yesterday. Fortunately the snow eased up on us on Saturday, which made my trip a pleasant one. At the presentation, I used Hop Step Jump into English that I authored for R.I.C, and demonstrated some activities where children learn some basic color words in a meaningful context. We particularly enjoyed the activities with the nursery rhyme, Baa, Baa, Black Sheep. By putting three M's - movement, music and mental engagement together, we can ensure that all the children learn English in their own unique way.

Just to add, my dear friend, Hiroko-sensei, helped me in many ways as usual - taking the photos, etc. Thank you, Hiroko-sensei!

Winter Lessons

Hi,

At English Square, we enjoyed the Winter Lessons with Tonya-sensei from Phoenix, Arizona in the USA this morning. It was a lot of fun to learn the diverse climate systems of the huge country and how children enjoy the winter days - making a snowman and snow angel and doing a snowball fight to name a few. We also made paper snowmen and snowflakes! It is always enlightening to explore a foreign culture with a guest teacher.

I had a great time yesterday, doing a presentation and catching up with teachers in Kanto Area at Nellie's Kodomo Eigo Festival in Tokyo. In my presentation, I explained how to make real learning happen in children's classrooms and shared more than several classroom activities with the teachers using my own series, Hop, Step, Jump into English. The session was full-house, and the teachers were all fun-loving people!

I also had a chance to see Patricia Oe's presentations on book reading. She is one of the most respected picture book authors in ELT. Her stories and illustrations are really heart-warming, which all of us need in this hectic everyday life. She is the best storyteller that I have ever met!

My next presentation is on Sunday, January 17 at Nellie's Kodomo Eigo Festival in Osaka. I am looking forward to having fun with teachers in Kansai Area then.

Eigo De Art Parent-Child Fun Day!

English Square and NIWA SHUNKI Art School hosted the Eigo De Art Parent-Child Fun Day yesterday. After reading the story, Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? by Eric Carl and Bill Martin Jr. we did a few activities on colors and animals and did a reading aloud of children's original story together. Children were excited to see their work put together to make a story and parents enjoyed acting it out with their little ones. What a synergy we can create when we put art and literature together! Amazing!

Eigo De Art - a Collaboration of Art and Literacy, American and Japanese Cultures!

English Square and NIWA SHUNKI Art School had the first collaborative work for children, Eigo De Art, this afternoon. We read the book, Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? by Eric Carl, first, and children created their own artwork, inspired by the story. The artwork takes the form of kamishibai, but it is also movable, with some strings attached to the animal's body parts! How neat! Next Sunday, we are going to do language activities and presentation using each child's work! Can't wait!

International Understanding Lessons at English Square!

English Square welcomed Razvan-sensei this morning, and had a great time together! Razvan-sensei, originally from Romania, was very good with children, and we all learned a lot about his country. The fact that gathered the highest interest from children was that Romanian children have a three-month long summer vacation. Children looked real envious when they heard this from Razvan-sensei.
